If you’re hiring a trailer from Cheema Hire in Western Sydney, one of the most common questions we get is: “Do I need a special licence to tow this?” The good news is—most of the time, the answer is no.
A standard C-class driver’s licence (car licence) allows you to tow a trailer with a gross vehicle mass (GVM) of up to 4.5 tonnes. This covers almost all of the trailers we hire out, including:
- Box trailers
- Car trailers\Bike trailers
- Flat-top trailers
- Plant trailers (as long as you’re not exceeding weight limits)
✅ What You Do Need
While a special licence usually isn’t necessary, there are a few key things you do need:
- A vehicle rated to tow the weight of the loaded trailer
- A tow bar in working condition
- A basic understanding of safe towing practices
We recommend checking your vehicle’s tow capacity and ensuring your load is evenly balanced and correctly secured. If you’re unsure, our experienced staff can help assess your needs and provide tips to keep your journey safe and legal.
